The Boston Globe website
published the pictures of each valedictorian in
Boston’s high schools and other high school programs.
As you thumb through the pictures, it is striking how many of these students are immigrants.
So many, that I decided to take some statistics.
The Globe listed the country of birth for each student.
For some US-born students I guessed that they were 2
nd generation immigrants (for instance if they were Vietnamese).
Almost 2/3 of the Boston valedictorians are either immigrants or children of immigrants. From my analysis:
here is the breakdown of the 38 valedictorians:
1st or 2nd generation US 63.2%
Later than 2nd generation US 32.8%
Born in the US 52.6%
Born overseas 47.4%
I can’t find an article in the Globe about the valedictorians, only pictures. It looks to me as though the Globe is missing out on a real story.

Okay, now let's breakdown the percentage of immigrant valedictorians into legal v illegal immigrant percentages.
Not only that, but there are virtually no white kids (except for Albanians)! This leads me to a conclusion that I reached about San Francisco as well: white liberals rarely send their kids to public schools with significant numbers of non-white students. Why is this so?
And how many of them are Hispanic illegal immigrants? That's what the current debate is largely about.
We can approximate by looking at statistics for Hispanics in America in general:
Professor Stefan Thernstrom of Harvard kindly provided me with data from National Assessment of Educational Progress test. Foreign born Hispanic students trailed non-Hispanic whites by over five to six grade levels by 12th grade (i.e., they were performing like white sixth or seventh graders when they were in 12th grade). Among American-born Hispanics, the gap is still about 3.3 grade levels.
The high school dropout rate for Hispanics overall appears to be approaching 50%.
This estimate tracks with most everything else we know about Hispanics. The white-Hispanic gap has been studied far less than the white-black gap, but it looks to be substantial. For example, the gap between whites and Mexican-Americans on the SAT is 77 percent of the size of the gap between whites and blacks.
On the SAT's competitor, the ACT, the white-Mexican gap is 71 percent of the white-black gap. (It’s 56 percent for other Hispanics.)
IQ? The huge NSLY study run by the U.S. military, which formed the basis for The Bell Curve, found Latinos scored 14 points below whites, or 77 percent of the white-black IQ gap.
Nearly two decades earlier, the 1965 Coleman report found a 13-point white-Hispanic IQ gap.
IQ reports from Latin America are not encouraging either—Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen in their important book "IQ and the Wealth of Nations" found, on a scale with white Americans as 100, scores like: Mexico, 87; Ecuador, 80; Peru 90; Puerto Rico, 84; Guatemala, 79; Argentina, 96; Uruguay, 96.

Steve,
Can't tell you how many are illegal, but 4 of the 38 are from South or Central America (but only if you count the Caribbean as Central America!). None were from Mexico which is THE problem when it comes to illegals:
Yukensi Miranda
Parkway Academy of Technology and Health
Born in: Venezuela
Samenta Abraham
Urban Science Academy
Born in: Haiti
Edwin Pimentel
Madison Park Technical Vocational High School
Born in: Dominican Republic
Ana Canales
Horace Mann School for the Deaf
Born in: Peru
Could it possibly be that the "nativists" are only trying to keep out "illegal aliens". I'm sure that the children you tout came through the same restrictive immigration trials that the rest of us and/or our parents did and have assimilated and risen to the top. Hurrah for them. And boo to you for trying to again stir up trouble. Pat Klein
So, These students are 17/18 years old, worked really hard, graduated at the top of their class, and are going on to college. Shouldn't we be applauding THAT instead of debating their immigrant status?
