The Small Matter of Actually Playing the Game

Exactly how desperate is the Boston Globe for new revenue? Apparently the Globe simply couldn’t wait to begin taking orders on Amazon for its upcoming book, which will be available February 11. Its title:

19-0: The Historic Championship Season of New England's Unbeatable Patriots

This ad is probably becoming wallpaper in one Super Bowl locker room, no doubt to the irritation of Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft. Amazon notes that there is “No Image Available” since the book’s cover photo, at least, will have to be delayed until after the small matter of actually playing the game. Even Yankee fans never had the chutzpah to do something quite this foolish.

This book takes its place alongside these other possible premature classics by Boston Globe reporters:

Unlikely Triumph: The Road to Washington of President Mike Dukakis

John Kerry – From Cambodia to the White House

Hillary Clinton: We Know She is Inevitable, Why Don't the Voters?

18-1: How Astounding Media Hubris Changed Pro Football History

I bet the Globe sportswriters are gagging on this foolishness more than anyone.

UPDATE: Hey, Coach Belichick, here is a page for you to post in the Patriots locker room. Sports Publishing now has a forthcoming book on Amazon entitled New York Giants: 2008 Super Bowl Champions. Heh.

You have all these sports media hacks at the Boston Globe--collectively worrying about layoffs--who are putting their thumbs into a pie that hasn't even finished baking yet. The linkage between this book and pending layoffs at the Globe is inarguable. They all want a life-preserver. Look at the stupid book that WCVB's Bob Halloran wrote about boxing; he was excoriated for a lousy job of writing. This is what happens when media hacks who fear for their jobs think they can just snap their fingers and turn into book authors.

Amazon.com has the same book in NY Giants for $13.57.

New York Giants: 2008 Super Bowl Champions [ILLUSTRATED](Hardcover)

Witch hunting only applies for Patriots?

jeez. The book production and distribution channels aren't built to respond overnight, so something like this is set up weeks in advance. If the Patriots win, they have an ISBN, they have pre-orders possibly waiting, they are on book lists in the chains, and they're set to go forward.

If the patriots don't win, they withdraw the book and return any pre-orders.

Happens *all* *the* *time*.

Sure, seneca, use the lead time and get everything ready to roll so that you can be ready to fulfill orders as soon as possible. But there is no need to list the title on Amazon until after the game. Amazon clients can (I imagine) create listings without making them visible and active.
